Speculation, in the Sunday press, has Manchester United linked with a move for an Arsenal defender.

The defender in question is Thomas Vermaelen.

It`s pointed out that Vermaelen has worked under Louis van Gaal when the latter had a brief spell as technical director at the Dutch club, Ajax, in 2004.

Vermaelen has only a year left on his contract and has struggled to cement a place at the heart of the Arsenal defence with Arsene Wenger preferring the duo of Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny.

With only a year left on his contract Arene Wenger could, possibly, be open to a deal and the speculation insists it could be as little as £8 million.

But would Thomas Vermaelen be the kind of player you`d be hoping Manchester United would buy?
