United In Just What Might Have Been Question

|

It is, at a rough guess, nearly two years since it was suggested that Manchester United would benefit from signing a top-notch centre-back.

But still, we await any news of a solution to the problem with several names gaining honourable mentions but without a deal being signed.

Today, lurking in the pages of the news source, the Daily Mail, is the inference that back in January 2018 Manchester United made an attempt to sign a defender who many feel may have cured our ill.

According to our referenced source, United made a concerted effort to sign Virgil van Dijk only to be told the 27-year-old defender had trod the same familiar route as some of his former team-mates and agreed to join Liverpool.

The rest, as they say, is history.

The defender is the hot favourite to be named as the PFA Footballer of the Year and has also galvanised a Liverpool defence with his side having a chance to end a long run of 29-years without winning the top-flight title.

Now, if United had been successful, I wonder where we’d stand now?

Would we be fighting for the title?

Would Mourinho still be in charge?

Just two questions that immediately spring to mind but let’s not ponder too long on what might have been eh!
