David Gill made an attempt to ease the fans’ concerns over the mounting debts, claiming that Sir Alex does have money to spend in the transfer market, as shown by the summer bid for Benzema and the signing of Chris Smalling from Fulham.

‘We used £15million to buy Antonio Valencia and we have well over £100m in the bank sitting there.

‘People look from the outside and say Alex has been under pressure. I think everyone who has dealt with Alex or seen him in the press knows he will not compromise what he wants to do for this club.

‘If I went to Joel Glazer and said ‘Alex wants a particular player, can we have the money?’ The answer would be an unequivocal yes. They have demonstrated it.

‘We didn’t get Benzema but we did offer 35m euros.’

The last part is surely true: Lyon themselves said United had made an offer and Benzema also mentioned something. But well over £100m in the bank to spend on players? Quite simply, the figures do not add up even for and I’m no expert at finances. Quite simply, judging by the bond release, the summer activity, the financial reports one has to conclude that we have to be extra careful about our spending and we certainly can’t splash £100m out on players.
