United get Burnley in next round

|

Manchester United have been drawn at home to Burnley in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.

The draw against Burnley has come about as United beat Aston Villa 4-2 at Old Trafford in what was an enthralling second half display from both teams.

Goals from Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford, Bruno Fernandes and Scott McTominay ensured that the Reds safely navigated their passage into the next round despite being handed a scare by Unai Emery’s men who went 2-1 up in the second half, thanks to goals from Ollie Watkins and a Diogo Dalot own goal.

The game against Burnley is scheduled to take place on the week commencing 19 December and it is sure to be a difficult challenge for Erik ten Hag and his team because Burnley currently sit top of the Championship, having won 10 of their 20 games in the league.

The game against the Reds will be extra motivation for Clarets’ boss, Vincent Kompany as given that he played for the blue side of Manchester, he would certainly love to get one over his former team’s local rivals.

On last night’s evidence it does seem as though United are taking this competition seriously because it will give the club the best chance to win a major trophy for the first time since 2017 and potentially win the first trophy of the season, with the final due to take place on 23 February 2023 at Wembley.

One of the other standout ties from the draw, which was conducted by former Man United players, Peter Schmeichel and Dion Dublin was the clash between Manchester City and Liverpool.
