Having scooped the major domestic individual honours last season, Wayne Rooney might be more than a little disappointed to miss out on a nomination for a prestigious Ballon d`Or award.

Perhaps his poor World Cup and subsequent domestic strife may well have influenced the selection panel. But I have to say it is pleasing to see the name of Diego Forlan on the nominations list.

Forlan, although rated as an expensive flop during his time at Old Trafford, has gone on to carve out a reputation as one of the best strikers on the continent. His displays, especially during the World Cup (with Uruguay) and the Europa League (with Atletico Madrid) where he was instrumental in helping the Spanish side win the tournament, obviously, haven`t gone unnoticed.

Now Diego may well miss out on the award, even though he is listed as fourth favourite, but it still remains something of an achievement to be selected in such exulted company.

Good on you Diego!

On a totally negative side, for us, the lack of a Manchester United player in the nominees is the first time this has occurred in the last twenty years.
