There was really going to be no hiding place was there!

With the UEFA press conference a mandatory affair and with those journalists able to attend that Sir Alex had banned from the domestic affairs, there was never going to be any chance of gliding over the Rooney affair.

In admitting that the player had chosen to leave Manchester United, Sir Alex used words such as shocked and disappointed to describe how he felt.

Recalling what had been said not too long ago, Sir Alex gave an indication of how long the current situation had been going on when he remarked,

“We are as bemused as anyone can be, we can`t quite understand why he would want to leave.”

“I was in the office on 14 August and David phoned me to say (Rooney) wasn`t signing a contract.”

“I was dumfounded. Only months before he was saying he was at the greatest club in the world.”

“I asked to have a meeting with the boy. He reiterated what his agent said, that he wanted to go.”

However, Sir Alex did indicate that there is a chance that things could change when he remarked that the door is still open if the striker chooses to change his mind.

Dark days ahead!
