Manchester United reserve team coach Rene Meulensteen has confirmed he is in talks to become the new coach of Brondby.

Michael Laudrup left the Danish club last month after his contract expired, and Meulensteen has been given permission by United boss Sir Alex Ferguson to enter discussions with the side that finished second in last season’s SAS-Ligaen.

Meulensteen: ‘I was contacted by Brondby and I asked them to clear up things with Manchester United before we proceeded. I went to Alex Ferguson and talked to him and he was very helpful.’

The 41-year-old Dutchman joined United’s backroom staff in 2001.
