As the Premier League title race approaches the critical stage, we`re reliant on Liverpool doing us a favour by taking points off of Chelsea.

We`re realistic to know that the fate of the title isn`t in our own hands but in the hands of the only side that can still get more points than us this season – Chelsea.

With Chelsea travelling to Anfield and United travelling to play Sunderland, there are many who see this as the weekend that could decide the titles destiny.

In fact there are some newshounds out there who are of the opinion that we`ve only to turn up at the `Stadium of Light` and the three points are ours.

They live in the fantasy world whereby they believe that because Steve Bruce was once a trusted lieutenant of Sir Alex`s then his team will roll over and let United win, doing a favour for an old boss syndrome I think it might be called.

The theory is probably as ill-judged though as the one that suggests Liverpool will roll over for Chelsea, just to prevent United claiming a record 19th title.

Both scenarios are something that will just not happen, professional pride will not allow it and this is the English Premier League we`re talking about, not some corrupt junta!

Therefore, perhaps those who still offer such tainted opinions should heed the words of Steve Bruce who is intent on firing his team up to do a job on us this Sunday.

Bruce, hoping to lead Sunderland to a top half finish, has, ahead of the fixture, commented,

“There`s all this stuff just because I played there for 10 years.”

“But what am I going to say to the players? ‘Oh by the way lads, just forget it today! There will be nearly 50,000 here, we`re live on the telly, every man and his dog wants to be here. Please don`t show up, just let them win.`

“It is not going to happen.”

“We seriously believe we can win and really want to win too.”

Looking into our crystal ball, we can see Sunderland giving us one hell of a game and we`ll need to be on top of our game if we`re going to push Chelsea all the way.

One humdinger of an encounter we fear!
