Down to ten men for the last fifteen or so minutes of normal time, the United defence stood firm in the face of a Spurs onslaught that, to be truthful, never fully materialized.

It was perhaps typical of the action throughout the ninety minutes that between the two boxes the play, from both sides, was sublime but lacking that cutting edge to create serious chances.

Speaking to the media, after the match, Sir Alex Ferguson praised his defence remarking,

“We defended very well. The kind of pressure we were under was just long balls into the box really.”

“With Ferdinand and Vidic as your centre backs you know you can cope with that.”

“Spurs never gave us any trouble with their attacking and we didn`t bother them too much either.”

“When we got to the last third we just didn`t quite have the cutting edge.”

The story of our away season perhaps!
