United could afford the luxury of a missed penalty and still take all three points against Bolton Wanderers this afternoon.

Team News – Sir Alex gave Scholes his first start since coming out of retirement, Ferdinand recovered form a midweek stomach bug, Lindegaard kept the green jersey and want-away youngster, Pogba, was given a place on the bench.

United Lindegaard, Evra, Ferdinand, Evans, Rafael, Nani, Carrick, Scholes, Valencia, Rooney, Welbeck

Subs – De Gea, Fabio, Giggs, Park, Pogba, Berbatov, Hernandez

First Half – United created an early chance when Carrick`s superb pass set Welbeck free but the Bolton keeper, Bogdan, did well to save his shot.

United should have taken the lead when they were awarded a penalty after Knight had transgressed. The defender was only given a yellow card when a red looked far more suitable. Rooney stepped up but Bogdan produced a great save to foil the striker.

The keeper then excelled again foiling Welbeck before then producing another great save to keep out a Rooney free-kick. A rare foray forward by Bolton saw Edwards waste a great chance ballooning over from inside the area.

But, on the stroke of halt time, United did take the lead through that old war-horse, Scholes. Nani saw a cross blocked but Rooney reacted quickly to fire the loose ball across goal where Scholes was waiting at the far post to finish it off.

United 1 Bolton 0 (Scholes – 45+1 minutes)

Half Time – United 1 Bolton 0

Second Half – The second half saw United dominate possession but take almost another thirty minutes to put the game beyond Bolton. Welbeck was the scorer but in stretching to turn the ball in tweaked a hamstring and was replaced by Hernandez.

United 2 Bolton 0 (Welbeck – 74 minutes)

the cherry on the cake though came with six minutes left when United improved their goal difference with a third. Carrick, after waiting so long to get his first goal for united was the scorer.

Collecting a ball from Giggs he calmly slid it home from just outside the area, a sublime finish and after two consecutive Premier League defeats, a welcome return to winning ways.

United 3 Bolton 0 (Carrick – 84 minutes)
