A goal in each half was enough to firmly enhance United`s position as favourites for the Premier League crown.
Team News – As expected, with a hectic schedule to close the season, Sir Alex Ferguson made a few changes. The most significant of these being Ashley Young, after coming off the bench in midweek to score, was rewarded with a start. Danny Welbeck replaced Javier Hernandez whilst Phil Jones missed out. Having to settle for a place on a strong looking bench.
As for the visitors, it was surprising to see that neither Joey Barton nor Bobby Zamora were in the starting eleven. Zamora was on the bench but Barton wasn`t included in the eighteen.
United – De Gea, Evra, Ferdinand, Evans, Rafael, Carrick, Young, Scholes, Valencia, Rooney, Welbeck
Subs – Amos, Jones, Giggs, Park, Cleverley, Pogba, Hernandez
First Half – United got the half underway and were to go on, for most of the half, to dominate proceedings. Much of the early chances, for United, came from set-pieces.
Early on Hill fouled Welbeck, just off of a central position, some twenty-five yards from goal, Rooney, from the resulting kick saw his shot deflected for a corner.
Minutes later, Young was fouled on the opposite side of the box, a similar distance from goal. This time Rooney saw his shot clawed away by Kenny. Our visitors, who`d hardly been out of their own half so far, exerted a spell of pressure that ended with a Buzsacky shot that went wide.
In the fourteenth minute United were to go ahead. Ashley Young tried to rush on to a through ball and Derry was adjudged to have fouled him inside the box. Derry received a straight red card with Rooney, subsequently, making no mistake form the spot beating the keeper low down t the keeper`s right.
United 1 QPR 0 (Rooney pen – 14 minutes)
United continued to gain free kicks and another foul, this tie by Hill on Welbeck, saw Young`s shot cannon into the wall. QPR, down to 10 men, went in search of an equaliser and Taarabt`s shot deflected off of Carrick requiring De Gea to tip the ball over the bar.
Young almost doubled the lead when he met a Rooney cross at the near post but his flicked header went wide of the far post. Rafael made an error and was relieved to see Evans block a Taarabt shot before United replied with a Rooney chip, from twenty yards out that Kenny clawed to safety.
With the half approaching a conclusion Valencia saw his cross headed over by Welbeck before Evra saw an angled shot drift wide.
Half Time – United 1 QPR 0
Second Half – United thought they`d doubled their lead three minutes into the second half but Welbeck`s effort, after a Scholes ball out to Valencia who provided the cross, was disallowed for offside.
Welbeck then curled a shot wide after a good build-up involving Young before Kenny did well to save a low shot, from twenty-two yards out, from Rooney. A rare piece of pressure form QPR saw a Diakite shot deflected wide before Scholes fired wide as United broke with pace.
Just before the hour mark Rafael had a great chance to double the lead, clean through he looked odds-on to score but Kenny somehow deflected his shot, fro seven yards onto the woodwork with his legs.
Rooney slipped a great ball into the path of Welbeck but Kenny was once again up to the challenge. Just a sit looked as if it was going to be a nervous last half to the half, Scholes did double the lead drilling in a low shot, from twenty yards out, from a Rafael assist.
United 2 QPR 0 (Scholes – 68 minutes)
Trying to get QPR back into the game, Smith saw a shot deflected wide but United could have extended their lead as the half progressed. First Carrick unleashed a screamer of a shot that hit the inside of the post and flew to safety, before Welbeck danced past two defenders only to see his shot, from eighteen yards, go wide.
