United took the three points in a match that saw the Evra and Suarez feud simmer on.
Team News – Sir Alex pretty much stuck with the side that had served him at Chelsea the previous week except Paul Scholes was to start, in place of Ashley Young. On the bench United fans were pleased to see the returning, from injury, Tom Cleverley, whilst Ryan Giggs was making his 899th appearance for United.
United – De Gea, Evra, Ferdinand, Evans, Rafael, Giggs, Carrick, Scholes, Valenica, Rooney, Welbeck
Subs – Amos, Fabio, Park, Cleverley, Pogba, Berbatov, Gernandez
First Half – Prior to the start we had the obligatory handshakes but Suarez refused to shake the hand of Evra. Liverpool got the action underway with the first piece of meaningful action seeing De Gea pull of a low save from the advancing Glen Johnson.
Welbeck, after a mazy run, saw a Valencia chip into the danger area claimed by Reina before a crude challenge from Jose Enrique saw Valencia a Giggs free kick headed behind by Johnson with Rooney lurking behind him. From the resulting corner Rooney had a weak header saved.
Johnson was proving to be a menace on our left flank and once again he was allowed to cut inside, this time his angled shot narrowly going the wrong side of the far post.
Rafael, bursting into the box, stumbled before regaining some sort of composure to force Reina into making a save before Rooney saw a low, long range, shot go well wide.
Just past the half hour mark United engineered the best chance of the half but Scholes close range header was saved by Reina, more of an instinctive save than a spectacular one.
Evra then climbed well to head over a Valencia cross before Welbeck, on a surge, dragged a shot wide. Gerrard then saw a shot deflected over for Liverpool`s first corner of the game, a second, won soon after, saw a volley from Skrtel go over the bar.
Right on the stroke of half time, Suarez thought he`d been fouled by Ferdinand as he tried to burst through, Phil Dowd, much to Suarez`s annoyance, waved play on.
Half Time – United 0 Liverpool 0
Second Half – United got the second half underway and were soon in front. An early corner was won and when Giggs put the ball into the danger area there was a flick on that left Rooney perfectly placed to volley home from close range for his 16th Premier League goal of the season
United 1 Liverpool 0 (Rooney – 47 minutes)
Less than three minutes later the lead was doubled. Valencia caught Spearing in possession and raced away to set up Rooney to score form twelve yards out, with the ball going into the net through the legs of Reina.
United 2 Liverpool 0 (Rooney – 49 minutes)
Not soon after, Rooney had the chance to get his hat-trick but somehow poked the chance well wide from six yards out. Liverpool were struggling to create chances and one effort, from all of thirty-five yards, from Agger sailed well wide.
But, with ten minutes of normal time remaining, the arrears were reduced. Carrick fouled Suarez and when Adam clipped the free kick into the penalty are the ball rebounded off Ferdinand for Suarez to knock it home.
United 2 Liverpool 1 (Suarez – 80 minutes)
With the game set up for a fine finish, Welbeck drove over the bar from inside the area before in stoppage time, De Gea pulled off a great save to tip a shot from Johnson over the bar.
