Ahead of the testimonial game against Everton last night, Wayne Rooney`s testimonial, Jose Mourinho had spoken about Manchester United`s season starting with that fixture.

What we didn`t know was that the end-result, against Everton, would mirror the drab sequence of 0-0 draws trotted out, at Old Trafford, when Louis van Gaal was in charge!

If the 60,000 crammed into Old Trafford paying homage to Rooney, after 12-years` service were expecting the usual glut of goals you get with a testimonial they were to sorely disappointed.

Yes, the game had chances but the longer it went on you just accepted that it was going to end 0-0.

United`s best chances probably fell to Zlatan Ibrahimovic but the Swede, on his first United appearance at Old Trafford, couldn`t disturb the onion bag.

As for Everton, their best chance fell to Romelu Lukaku, a rumoured big-money transfer target of Mourinho`s old club Chelsea, but the Belgian striker headed the simple chance the wrong side of the post.

Nevertheless, Wayne Rooney enjoyed his night, against his former team, remarking after the event,

“I`ve spent 12 years here, I`ve had great success and hopefully a lot more to come. I`ve got some great moments to look back on from my time here but I`d like to think there will be more.

“It was a great night, a proud moment for me and my family. It`s something I`ll never forget.”

Now let`s get that Community Shield in the trophy cabinet and then get the 2016 / 2017 Premier League show on the road.
