Two Reds top their group but one is eliminated

|

There was a contrast of fortunes for the Manchester United contingent at the World Cup as Diogo Dalot and Bruno Fernandes topped their group, but Facundo Pellistri and his Uruguay team-mates bowed out at the group stages.

On an evening of high drama, South Korea went through at the expense of Pellistri and Uruguay as they defeated Portugal 2-1 at the Education City Stadium.

Pellistri started the game against Ghana as he helped his side defeat Ghana 2-0, but that was not enough because South Korea scored two more goals than Uruguay. Uruguay’s only two goals came in the game against the Black Stars and up until the 90th minute in the Portugal and South Korea game, it seemed as though those two goals would be enough to ensure Diego Alonso’s sides passage to the next round but Hwang Hee-chan of South Korea had other ideas and sent Uruguay out of the World Cup.

Despite Diogo Dalot and his Portugal team-mates suffering a 2-1 defeat at the hands of South Korea, they still managed to top their group as they finished two points above the team that defeated them.

Dalot, making his first start in this year’s World Cup, registered an assist for Portugal’s opener that was scored by Ricardo Horta in the fifth minute to give his side the lead.

Bruno Fernandes did not come on during the game against South Korea, which is positive news from a Portugal perspective because it means that he will be fully rested and refreshed heading into Portugal’s Round of 16 clash, and who they will play will be determined by tonight’s games in Group G.
