As January is getting closer, the rumours are getting sillier. But it’s always worth discussing them, as we fans often come up with more sensible ideas than the tabloids.

I do not spare much thought for Luke Freeman. The Gillingham guy is apparently set to sign for Arsenal – I don’t really understand why, they are not exactly famous of bleeding in young English players but so be it.

A more interesting note is that Anelka’s price appears to be rocketing upwards, it has now reached the Ł15m barrier. Silly, did I say? Well, it’s nothing short of ridiculous for a 28-year-old player of Bolton. Even if he scored the winner against us.

Then there is the speculation that Barcelona, grown weary of Ronaldinho’s off-colour displays, are prepared to offload him to United, in exchange for Cristiano Ronaldo. Come off it, guys: the world’s most in-form player for a seemingly burnt-out 27-year-old? No thanks.

Strange as it may seem but some tabloids apparently think we really want to sign Gabriel Agbonlahor and are ready to splash out Ł15m for him. I like the Villa forward very much: he’s got fantastic pace, good skill, an eye for goal… but we happen to have pacey players who are capable of scoring. Ever heard of Rooney, Ronaldo, Tevez…? You get the point I’m sure.

And the last one for today. David Villa. Oh well. Now he happens to be a player who would be a fantastic acquisition for us. I think so. Struggling in a hapless Valencia team, he would jump ship any time I think to land at a real superpower. The problem is the quoted price what is Ł25m. He’s not worth as much. I think he’s a slightly better player than Fernando Torres but still not a Ł25m player.

Of course, this discussion about his price is academical: I’m sure we won’t buy him in January. He’d command a staggering fee but would not be able to play in the Champions League. So what’s the point?
