Today though, the scenario could be set to take a different twist.
The German media source, Bild is reporting that Manchester United and Barcelona have a new rival for the Dutch international defender with the 2019 Champions League winners, Liverpool, looking to pair de Ligt with their other Dutch centre-back, Virgil van Dijk.
With Manchester United not being able to offer Champions League football next season, my personal view is that de Ligt will need some serious impressing, during any proposed talks, to persuade the teenager to sign for us.
But, as they say, stranger things have happened in this weird and wonderful game of ours.
