Sir Alex, unsurprisingly, was furious after Martin Atkinson’s mistakes contrived to United’s FA Cup exit.

So our manager faces an FA charge yet again. Well, it’s nothing new. He will probably get a touchline ban, too, something that Wenger who called a linesman a liar last season, never gets.

But never mind. Let’s see what he was raving about, was he right?

‘It’s absolutely ridiculous,’ he told MUTV, referring to Atkinson’s decision not to award a penalty for a clear foul by Distin.

‘I cannot explain it. Managers get sacked because of things like that and he’s going to referee a game next week.’

‘He’s not doing his job properly and he needs to be assessed. I’m assessed as a manager, players are assessed, referees should be assessed properly by the right people.

‘That performance today should not be accepted by our game.’

I know a lot of people will say that ‘ol’ rednose is whining again’. But please put aside who said it (and the manner he used) and consider the implications.

How many fans were crying out recently for the introduction of an assessing system for referee’s? How many of us urged the FA to make the refs accountable rather than leaving him untouchables what they are now.

Those who hate Fergie will not admit if he’s right especially as most of his thoughts were aired only because of frustration – but that does not mean he doesn’t have a point.

Oh, and for the record, he added that Pompey’s penalty was a correct decision. So it’s a bit unfair to say he only wanted to have a go at Atkinson.
