Having, churlishly, scoffed at the idea that Sir Alex Ferguson knew nothing of the idea to name the North Stand after him, I now need to offer a profuse apology.

It seems that United went to extraordinary lengths to ensure that what was going on was kept a secret.

The signage on the new stand wasn`t started until the last Stadium tour had finished on Thursday and continued through the early hours of Friday morning.

Put in place by six abseilers, it`s understood that only 8 people at Old Trafford were aware what was going on and that those erecting the signage were forced to sign a confidentiality agreement.

Credit to all those involved and this large slice of humble pie I`ve had to devour didn`t taste particularly pleasant, but such is life!
