Many feared what would happen today as England were due to play Switzerland and the FA decided that a minute’s silence would be hold to commemorate the Munich tragedy.

Fortunately, it turned out to be okay. You could hear the odd voice but 99.9% of the fans remained silent – though in truth it was a safe, short silence, did not last one minute.

That means that what you could experience in Wales, Northern Ireland and Ireland deserve even more credit. All three national teams are in action today, in all three stadiums a minute’s silence was held – and all were observed impeccably.

I salute the England fans but above all salute those Welsh and Irish men and women who showed their respect. Thank you.
