Under the circumstances, I think I`ll keep this brief!

Going into this fixture, United knew that something remarkable would have to happen on the last day of the season for that twentieth top flight title to come to Old Trafford.

Entering the day level on points with Manchester City but with a far inferior goal difference, United knew they had to win and hope that City dropped points against a Queens Park Rangers side that are infamous for their poor away form, unless off course United could score a hatful of goals to take the title on goal difference, a very unlikely prospect.

But, in a work that some would, beforehand, have called fiction, events panned out in the following way.

Stadium of Light – Wayne Rooney opened the scoring for United, netting at the far post to score his 27th Premier League goal of the season with 20 minutes gone.

? The title is heading United`s way if scores stay the same!

The Etihad Stadium – City edge ahead just before half time with Paddy Kenny fumbling a shot from Korluka

? The title is heading City`s way if scores stay the same.

The Stadium of Light – United continue to dominate the game with the woodwork and some excellent goalkeeping keeping the score at 1-0

The Etihad Stadium – City start the second half disastrously, Lescott`s weal back header allows Ciise to equalize for Queens Park Rangers.

? The title is now heading United`s way if scores stay the same.

The Etihad Stadium – Matters go from bad to worse for City when Mackie heads home at the far post leaving City trailing 2-1 to Queens Park Rangers.

? The title is still heading United`s way if scores stay the same.

The Stadium of Light – The final whistle blows, United, thanks to that Rooney goal, have won, but there is still two minutes of stoppage time to play back at the Etihad Stadium.

The Etihad Stadium – Dzeko makes it 2-2 with 93 minutes on the clock, City are buzzing.

? The title is still heading United`s way if scores stay the same.

The Etihad Stadium – A minute later, in the 94th minute, Aguero scores to put City 3-2 up, pandemonium breaks out.

? The tile is now City`s if scores stay the same.

The Etihand Stadium – The final whistle is blown, the most dramatic Premier League season ever is over.

Talking to the media afterwards, a shocked Sir Alex Ferguson had this to say,

“We`re all disappointed obviously. We should be disappointed, as we did our best today”

“But for their goalkeeper, we could have scored seven goals.”

“We hit the post, the bar and the keeper made some fantastic saves throughout the match.”

“It was a good level of performance and I have absolutely no recriminations about our season at all.”

“Yes, there will be times when we can sit back and say we did this wrong. But 89 points would have won the league most seasons.”

Indeed it would, but not this year and all that`s left now is the inquest as to where the title was lost!
