Manchester United will have to increase their offer for Michael Carrick to around £15million after Tottenham confirmed they have rejected a bid for the England midfielder.

Carrick, 24, is currently on England duty at the World Cup in Germany and was subject to a £10million bid to solve United’s problem midfield area since the departure of Roy Keane.

Spurs spokesman: ‘We can confirm we have rejected a bid from Manchester United for Michael Carrick. Michael Carrick is a player we are not looking to sell.’

Spurs would only consider an offer of around £15million for the former West Ham midfielder. Or perhaps a deal involving out-of-favour United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy.
