United players will now receive their marks for their performance against Sporting. It’s high time to do it as I forgot to rate them after the Everton game…

Edwin van der Sar: He had to deal with powerful shots but saved all with remarkable confidence and composure. 7

Wes Brown: Defensively solid and his only really good cross resulted in the winning goal. 7

Rio Ferdinand: Yet another confident display in the heart of the defence. 7

Nemanja Vidic: Nobody could get past him yesterday.7

Patrice Evra: Same as Brown, without a match-winning cross. Should develop an understanding with Nani to be effective. 6

Paul Scholes: A solid, reliable contribution but nothing special. Clinical pass to Brown before the goal. 6

Michael Carrick: In the absence of Owen Hargreaves, he had to do a mainly defensive job and was equal to it. Nothing special but it was enough… yesterday. 6

Cristiano Ronaldo: Subdued, quiet, lacklustre in the first hour. Sprang to life after his well-taken goal and could have earned himself a higher marking with a bit more luck. 7

Ryan Giggs: Offered very little in the middle, his usual sharpness and vision were nowhere to be seen. 5

Luis Nani: His return was less eventful than Ronaldo’s. He’s still very inconsistent and yesterday he wasn’t on song, to put it mildly. 5

Wayne Rooney: Isolated but worked hard and from one of his passes Nani could have scored. Will be better if we play in a more attacking formation and deploy two strikers. 6

Louis Saha: Not a very successful cameo, he missed a gilt-edged chance to increase our lead. 5

Carlos Tevez: In for Ronaldo, he did very little to convince. He had very few time for it, of course. 5
