In recent days there have been several articles whereby Louis van Gaal has almost been pleading with Gareth Southgate not to pick Luke Shaw for the forthcoming U21 European Championships.

Our Dutch boss was of the opinion that Shaw, having been to the World Cup, in Brazil, with England last summer, needed a rest to prepare him for the 2015 / 2016 season.

However, until the squad was announced this morning, nobody seemed quite sure whether Southgate would be obliging.

As it turns out, with Southgate announcing his squad for the tournament, being held in the Czech Republic from 17th June until the 30th June, there is only one Manchester United player in the squad, that being Jesse Lingard.

It appears that Southgate has accepted van Gaal`s request that Shaw isn`t fit enough to participate and has decided to omit him from the squad.

Kudos to all concerned.
