On a disappointing night for the U21 side, as they crashed out of the European Championships in Denmark, there was one positive we can draw from the fixture.

Although two late goals saw England exit the competition, the press are quite rightly pointing out that Chris Smalling was the best England player on view.

Smalling has made great strides since moving to Old Trafford and his defensive capabilities, allied with being able to bring the ball out of defence, will serve us well in the years to come.

Already the fee we paid to Fulham for his services, is beginning to look to be value for money and as one of the popular tabloids pointed out, post-match, they described him as,

“One of the few players here who will make it to the seniors.”

Elsewhere, in the previous match, Phil Jones, our recent signing from Blackburn Rovers (although pen has still to be put to paper) also picked up several accolades for his defensive attributes with one paper describing him as the natural successor to John Terry(?) in the way he oozes authority and class.

It looks like Sir Alex Ferguson has recruited well as he looks to provide Manchester United with another side that can dominate for years to come.
