One player who has been conspicuous by his absence in Manchester United`s pre-season build-up is Chris Smalling.

After being featured in the press for coming a cropper whilst on his summer vacation, little has been heard or seen of Smalling since.

The defender has yet to play any part in the pre-season games in China, Sweden and Manchester with Jose Mourinho explaining his absence down to a re-occurrence of a small injury.

However, reports reaching us today Imply that Smalling was part of the squad that trained this morning ahead of the Community Shield clash with Leicester City, at Wembley, this Sunday.

But whether Jose Mourinho chooses to play Smalling or not is open to debate, even more so with the defender not available for selection for the opening fixture of the season, against Bournemouth.

Smalling is, of course, banned after being sent-off in the FA Cup Final triumph against Crystal Palace back in May.
