After a trio of third-placed finishes in the past four years, United are uwell aware of the Champions League qualifiers. And that is why second place … for once … is the realistic target.

Darren Fletcher: ‘Fighting for second place is not what any of us at Manchester United are conditioned for. We are all winners and we want to be in first place. But second place is better than third in terms of qualifying for the Champions League.

‘There is a huge difference in terms of where our focus will be at the start of next season. We do not want to be heading into eastern Europe again for a Champions League qualifier in August.

‘It is far better being able to concentrate solely on the Premiership, then look at the Champions League when it comes along a month later.’
