With the transfer window now officially open, we expect the Rooney situation to be cranked up even further by the tabloid media.

Today, the former Manchester United full-back and now respected Sky Sports TV pundit, Gary Neville, is quoted in the press urging Rooney to stay at Old Trafford, with quotes printed in the media that read,

“I played with Wayne for many years. He is a fantastic footballer.”

“Personally, with my allegiances, I`d never recommend anyone leave United because I believe it is a great stage to play football and you can achieve what you want there.”

“I`ve seen David Beckham and other big players leave United and it really is something that comes down to the individual and the club.”

“I`ve seen Ryan Giggs, when he was 27, linked to Inter Milan, Juventus ad AC Milan and stay.”

Now whether Neville`s words will be heeded by Rooney remains to be seen, but like I`ve said before the whole scenario appears to depend upon United clarifying that Rooney did not ask for a transfer, as hinted by Sir Alex Ferguson.

To me, it seems quite strange that somebody would be willing to leave on the back of the inference that he asked for a transfer when he didn`t – complicated or what!
