As he looks for a return to first team action.

Jumping out at you in some of the plethora of newspapers that appeared on the news stand, on Saturday, was the inference that Wayne Rooney had approached Louis van Gaal about playing a part in the fixture against Tottenham Hotspur, on Sunday.

The insinuation being that having participated in several training sessions last week, Rooney was of the opinion that he was ready to make his long awaited comeback.

However, once the eighteen names for the squad were released, the name of Wayne Rooney was not included, suggesting that Louis van Gaal had stuck to his guns and his belief that Rooney needed to get some action under his belt in an Under-21 fixture before he could be considered for a place in the first-team starting eleven.

To that effect we can confirm that, tonight, Rooney will start for the Under-21 side as they take on a Middlesbrough Under-21 side.

The indications are that Rooney will get about an hour to prove is fitness and could then figure in the FA Cup quarter-final replay against West Ham United this Wednesday evening, at Upton Park, as long as there is no adverse reaction from his knee tonight.
