Wayne Rooney scored his first Premier League goal against Arsenal. He scored his first Premier League goal for United against Arsenal. He scored his first headed goal for United against Arsenal. And now he scored his 100th Premier League goal – against Arsenal.

“Wayne was unbelievable. I think he was the key point for us in the sense Arsenal just couldn`t handle him,” Sir Alex said after Rooney scored the second in the 3-1 win at the Emirates.

‘He was world class today, there`s absolutely no doubt. Every time when the ball went forward up the pitch towards him, we were on the attack. He turned the defenders so many times, it was a really top performance.’

Absolutely, he was wonderful as a ‘false number nine’, dropping deep and drifting wide then required but on the shoulders of the defenders when that was called for. His passing and decision-making were brilliant throughout and he produced a wonderful finish for the second goal.

It’s the first time he ever scored 20 goals in the Premier League and he’s well on course to finish as top scorer. Many predicted that Rooney would flourish thanks to the extra responsibility on him following the departure of Ronaldo – and that is exactly what happened.

The downside? I was scared witless when he went down clutching his knee in the second half… an injury to Rooney could prove fatal for us.
