United have been hit by the news that Wayne Rooney will miss the start of the new campaign due to a virus picked up in Nigeria.

Rooney joins Ronaldo, Nani, Anderson, Saha and possibly Owen Hargreaves in missing the start of our new season – which includes away trips to Pompey, Chelsea and Liverpool.

There is no news on whether or not Carrick (who is also known to have picked up the virus) will be abel to make the season opener against Newcastle at Old Trafford.

The news means youngster Fraizer Campbell is sure to see first team action sooner than expected; asuming Ferguson decides not to pursue interest in a striker.

Though this news is a tough one, there is one bright spark….Carlos Tevez. The Argentine has revelled in the absnse of Rooney and Ronaldo in pre-season and is sure to be our main thrust going forward.

There will be more on the Rooney injury as we get it…
