It would be difficult to imagine Wayne Rooney playing for any other English club and as he has now expressly stated he does not want to play on the continent, it looks as though United will have him until the end of his career.

While Ronaldo is surrounded by constant speculation due to his unquestioned brilliance, Rooney’s sometimes understated role goes unnoticed and therefore continental suitors are not vying for his services.

This does not bother the young Englishman who sees no reason why he should ever leave Manchester United.

‘I have no desire to play abroad,’ he said ‘I love playing for Manchester United and I’m pretty sure that will never change.

‘Our game in England has improved so much in the past few seasons I think we have proved now that we have the best league in the world. We attract the best players and, in my eyes, it’s by far the best league.’

‘It is up to other players if they decide to play abroad but, for me, English football is better than anything else.’

Unlike his boss, Rooney would prefer avoiding the English teams in the Champions League quarter-finals, but mainly because he feels it would be good for English football.

‘It’d be nice if all the English teams could stay apart. It would be better for English football if we all progress.’
