I can’t deny that I’m not terribly concerned by the fact that Wayne Rooney plays much better for United than for England. But the boy is uncomfortable with it.

‘Of course I do think of the chances I’ve missed. Any game when you miss chances it’s disappointing. But I don’t even think I’ve had that many chances. I don’t know why. I know I can play a lot better.

‘I’m expected to play well for my country every game and I want to start playing well from Saturday.’

He had to miss a lot of chances since 2004 when he scored his last England goal. His last United goal came… last Saturday so the contrast is obvious. He loves quality opposition (Arsenal, Liverpool, Roma, Milan could testify) so being unable to find the net against Macedonia… well, he can’t explain neither can I.

He came back well from his latest metatarsal injury, thanks to the expertise and patience of Sir Alex, according to the youngster himself.

‘If I had played earlier, I would not have been being fair to myself,’ said Rooney, who made his return against Sporting on September 19.

‘I would not have been 100% fit and there would still have been a risk of it breaking again.

‘Obviously, if there was a chance to play I would have loved to do so, but in the end, the right decision was not to.’

And two goals in the last two games were fitting rewards for patience.
