Rightly restored to his more favoured position, Wayne Rooney looked far more like the player we know he can be as England went down to Uruguay last night.

The highlights for Rooney, if they can be called that in a 2-1 defeat that leaves England on the brink of elimination, were a free kick from the edge of the area that went just wide, a header from a corner that crashed against the woodwork and the goal he scored to make it 1-1.

The goal was Rooney`s 40th for England but his first in a World Cup Finals, it also edged him nearer to the total amassed by England`s top-scorer ever, our very own Bobby Charlton, who amassed 49 during his international career.

Will Rooney have enough time to overhaul Sir Bobby?
