Yesterday, at Anfield, Wayne Rooney had the opportunity to put the icing on the cake with the late penalty awarded by Martin Atkinson.

Prior to the game much had been made about Rooney`s poor scoring record at Anfield, a record that had seen him score just once in ten visits, and the penalty provided Wayne with the ideal opportunity, as well as rubbing Liverpool`s nose in it, of improving that record,

Unfortunately, Rooney`s spot-kick wasn`t the best and Simon Mignolet, simply had to dive to his right to pull off a save.

Wayne knew he`d missed a glorious chance and afterwards acknowledged that perhaps the best thing he could have done was hand the ball to Juan Mata to give the Spaniard the chance to wrap up the game whilst also notching his first hat-trick for Manchester United.

Although, I do recall Mata not being that excellent when taking spot-kicks with Chelsea, for instance the final against Bayern Munich, which went to a penalty shoot-out, did he not miss the first kick?
