Wayne Rooney is out of tomorrow’s Champions League quarter-final against Bayern – which should not be a surprise to anyone, considering Fergie’s Friday announcement that Rooney will be forced to miss 2-3 weeks. But an insane rumour has spread over the press about a miraculous recovery which could see him recalled for the big game on Wednesday.

‘He’s got no chance. We’ve made some good progress with the lad, the medical team have done fantastic, but I’m not prepared to take a risk on a player who is not 100% fit,’ Sir Alex said.

‘The boy is making good progress. The medical team have done a fantastic job but it is an ankle injury the same as any other ankle injury. You can’t take a risk with a player who is not 100%.

‘I don’t think he will be on the bench although he might talk me into it, it is a difficult one.’

OK, so does he have a chance or not then? Rooney didn’t train this morning so he wouldn’t be of much use anyway – I don’t think his ankle is all right. A fit and healthy Federico Macheda is a better bet than a Wayne Rooney hobbling around in pain. So why would Fergie allow himself to be talked into putting Wayne on the bench?
