Sir Alex Ferguson jokingly threatened Wayne Rooney with a heavy fine despite the youngster’s phenomenal display in the 4-1 defeat of Bolton at Old Trafford.

Ferguson: ‘Wayne was marvellous. The balance and purpose of his game is wonderful. But he promised me a goal for my birthday so I might have to fine him a week’s wages.’

Even if he did not get his name on the scoresheet, Rooney was far too good for Bolton, with one moment in particular standing out.

It came just after the hour mark when he battled through three separate challenges close to the halfway line, then ran on to Louis Saha’s return pass before brilliantly flicking the ball across the area with the outside of his right foot to Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo, who had twice hit a post earlier in the contest, prodded home to ease United into a two-goal lead and ensure an eighth win in 10 Premiership outings for the Red Devils.
