Cristiano Ronaldo’s stunning goal scored in Porto won the Puskas Goal of the Year trophy at FIFA’s awards gala. That effort sealed United’s place in the semi-final of the Champions League and was truly a special goal.

But it wasn’t as good as, say, Wolfsburg striker Grafite’s mazy run through the Bayern defence, concluded with a classy finish. Ronaldo simply picked up the ball in acres of space and unleashed it from a long way out. He hit it sweetly and it flew into the net but these goals are so overrated in every goal competition.

‘If you asked me how to score a goal like that I wouldn`t be able to tell you.

‘It`s just hitting it hard and seeing the net billow, that`s all.’

Ronaldo’s own words. It was a great, magnificent goal, no doubt but it wasn’t even the best Manchester United goal of the season. That award should go to another Ronaldo effort: his second at the Emirates stadium where his flick-on right in front of United’s penalty area launched a sweeping counter-attack which he finished expertly after a lung-busting sprint through the length of the pitch.

But hey, I won’t complain that a Manchester United goal was voted the best of 2009. It’s just that I, personally, feel that there were better ones.
