Cristiano Ronaldo has been voted Writers’ Player of the Year but the significance of that award can be summed up by the fact that Thierry Henry somehow landed it last season.

As you all know, Ronaldo won both PFA Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year awards and it’s the first time ever a player collected the Writers’ award, too. Andy Gray was beaten to it by Emlyn Hughes in 1977 – the year when United denied Liverpool the Treble.

Didier Drogba, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs were running him close for the award so a word must go for them, too. But otherwise, congratulations to Ronaldo!
