OK, so we almost believed that Ronaldo was going to stay. After all, he spent most of the spring talking about how wonderfully happy he is at United – yet he is off to Madrid now.

According to the club’s statement, Ronaldo himself asked to be allowed to leave and Real put in an unconditional offer of 80 million which, roughly, is an absolutely staggering amount of cash which we will receive straightaway when Ronaldo signs his deal.

It’s not a question that he will leave now, I’m sure he’ll be able to negotiate a good enough deal with Florentino Perez. I can’t say I’m happy and I do not kid myself: the current squad is not good enough to win things without Ronaldo. However, the foundations are there. We’ll need two or three major signings to be able to compete with the biggest teams but as usually, I trust Sir Alex to deliver these players for us.
