Though earlier this week we heard that Rio Ferdinand might even face Wigan, now it’s certain that he’s still not fit and is unavailable against Arsenal. Which, of course, raises question marks about whether he’ll be fit for the Champions League final on May 27.

‘We would like to have better news on Ferdinand,’ Sir Alex said.

‘It is one of those calf niggles that usually take ten days to two weeks. Other than his work in the gymnasium he is not training. He won’t play tomorrow but he should be fit for next Sunday’s game at Hull City and I am sure he will be available for the final.’

All these niggling injuries… it’s beginning to look like another Owen Hargreaves or Gary Neville. I hope I’m wrong of course: even though Jonny Evans has come on leaps and bounds this season, it’d be hardly great news if we were forced to field him against Barcelona…
