Rio Ferdinand, apparently, has been badgering Fergie all day long to persuade the boss to field him against Spurs in the Carling Cup final. Rio had an excellent game and United won the cup, much to the delight of the fans and the lad himself.

While granting Ferdinand his wish worked out well on this occasion, he shouldn’t always get what he asks for. Recently he commented on the popular topic of Fergie’s potential successors and he told us that ‘the one name jumping out is José Mourinho’.

Oh dear. He actually wants Mourinho to replace Fergie. No thanks Rio. I’d rather have a manager who does not have an obvious distrust for youth and flair and who isn’t the champion of short-termism.
