Former England captain Rio Ferdinand is no longer guaranteed to start for Manchester United according to Sir Alex Ferguson.

The surprising revelation comes ahead of the Champions League match against FC Otelul Galati at Old Trafford, a game which Ferdinand will play, Fergie believes the 33-year old, who also lost the Old Trafford captaincy last season due to injury, is suffering the effects of his seniority, admitting he’s lost a yard of pace in recent seasons.

With a strong base at centre half, including the likes of Nemanja Vidic, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling, Ferguson is hoping his veteran defender, now in his 10th season at the Premier League champions, will be able to adapt and help out in other ways.
