We cannot be certain that Federico Macheda will be a Manchester United player in the long-term. He might disappear, end up playing in Serie B or something.

But you have to consider what young players need to succeed: in my opinion the three most important factors are talent, mental strength and luck. He’s got plenty of talent, that’s obvious, he proved it in the Reserves and in the Academy team as well. Mental strength?

Well, imagine a scenario when Liverpool are two points ahead of us on the table, we’re playing Aston Villa who put in a great performance and lead 2-1. Imagine an 18-year-old (he’s not even turned 18 yet) Italian striker coming on as a substitute for the awful Nani and curling home a winner at 2-2 in the 93rd minute, from a very difficult situation. Would that show mental strength?

As for luck: I hope he’ll have that as well. Because I think only misfortune can stop him enjoying a great career. But even if disaster strikes and he won’t fulfil his potential, this goal will probably be remembered for a long, long time.
