After enduring speculation about how Wigan’s pitch will hinder us, here’s the next one: the Luzhniki surface is uneven and there are brown patches on it.

Reports say that the turf, imported from Slovakia, has not yet recovered from transportation and it looks like it’s been laid down too late to be perfect in time for the match.

It looks pretty ugly and brown, and that’s not just a rumour: even UEFA admitted.

‘We are slightly worried about the look of it. In terms of the quality, we have made some tests in the last few days and it is perfectly fine,’ UEFA director of communications William Gaillard said.

‘It may not look very, very green on television, but, essentially, it is a good pitch to play football on. At this stage, we are confident it will be fine.’

Well I hope so as I wouldn’t like the game to be disrupted by injuries to players – and it’s certain that a bad pitch will favour Chelsea’s route one football and hinder our passing game. But if they say it’s fine then I’m ready to believe it’s fine…
