Michael Owen will join Manchester United by the end of the day. It looks certain: the papers broke the story last night, he was spotted coming to Carrington in the morning and allegedly he completed his medical at United.

He’s aging; he’s lost his pace; his all-round quality was always mediocre, his main strength was always his outstanding his finishing. He’s got no physical presence, he offers no aerial threat. He’s injury-prone and if he stays fit he’ll block the opportunities of Macheda and Welbeck.

The only upside, if there is at all, is that he’s for free and allegedly ready to accept a pay-as-you-play deal with a relatively meagre basic salary. If we could somehow fix in his contract that he must kiss his badge in front of the Kop at Anfield then it’d be worth it. Otherwise… I struggle to see how he’d score 10 league goals and if he can’t reach that amount then there is no point in signing him, a specialist goalscorer…

Besides, it betrays a lack of ambition in the transfer market which could be very damaging to the club’s profile in the wake of the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo. For me it looks like the only winner in this deal is Michael Owen.
