Fabio da Silva earned Sir Alex’s praise after his full Champions League debut: the Brazilian left-back was solid at the back and brave going forward. It was a sinking feeling to see him being stretchered off after Valencia’s goal but it’s nothing serious.

‘He was absolutely outstanding,’ said Sir Alex.

‘The boy is a magnificent player at only 18 years of age. Absolutely first class.’

It’s a bit of an exaggeration I think: Fabio did well indeed but his debut, against Spurs, was way more impressive. Yet it’s encouraging to see him playing well again. Fergie added that Fabio suffered from cramp, nothing else, so he should be fit for Sunday’s visit to Anfield – not that Sir Alex will risk playing him against Liverpool.
