The competition is there, and is plain for all to see, for Danny Welbeck at Old Trafford but the striker us up for the challenge.

After starting the community shield alongside Wayne Rooney his intention is, as he told The Daily Star, to ‘break into the team’ on a regular basis.

He is not fussy who he plays alongside up front, as long as he does – and when a chance comes along he intends to take it, with him going into the season in ‘confident’ mood: ‘my main aim is to break into the team and get a partnership going with whoever is up front.

‘You can’t say too much after one game, you’ve got to keep working hard and hopefully break into the team during the season.

‘If I keep performing well, hopefully the manager will keep picking me. I’m feeling confident.’

Rooney is pretty secure in the staring XI, with Javier Hernandez ‘expected’ to be his preferred partner so even after them Welbeck is battling with Dimitar Berbatov, Michael Owen, Federico Macheda and Mame Biram Diouf for a place in the squad.

With the added incentive of England recognition spurring him on this can only help club and country.
