The big news of the week is that Avram Grant has been named as Portsmouth manager. The Israel man used to work as technical director at the club before taking over the reins at Chelsea after Mourinho’s abrupt exit.

He was ridiculed at that time and I must admit I laughed at his dourness and his muppetlike appearance – but in hindsight I have to say that he did a damn good job that season. United had an incredibly great team yet that Chelsea pushed us to the limits in the league and in the Champions League as well. Scolari and Hiddink could not do this against a much weaker Manchester United side last season…

So I have some respect for Grant now and fully agree with Sir Alex’s sentiments that he’s capable of keeping Pompey up – even though he clearly needs some investment in players to do that as the current bunch looks inadequate for survival. But in a way I’m rooting for Grant and do you know why?

His name is forever linked with one of the greatest nights of my life as a fan. He is part of that night in Moscow, just as Sammy Kuffour is very much a part of the whole package that is Nou Camp 1999. They might not remember those nights as fondly as I do but I’ll never forget them. So, for me, tomorrow’s visit to Fratton Park will be like greeting an old friend, a friend whom I haven’t seen in a long time and who is not really keen on recalling our last meeting…
