It was somewhat of a surprise to see John O’Shea leading United out of the tunnel on Sunday: after all, Paul Scholes, Wayne Rooney and Darren Fletcher were all in the team. However, Scholes dislikes being captain while O’Shea is older than both Rooney and Fletcher and played more games for United than them. So it’s not such a baffling choice I suppose. And our Irishman was delighted.

‘It is a huge honour to be captain of Manchester United,’ he said.

‘It is nice to do it in pre-season games but to be captain for the first game of a new season is something I will always cherish.’

O’Shea also added that he hopes to make the most of his chances again, even though he knows he’s not first choice if everyone’s fit. But that’s why we have a strong, big squad, he says.
