In an earlier article, written today, I surmised that, perhaps, our current policy of buying young British talent, illustrated perfectly by the recent signings of Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, might be flawed.
The article, and-wan-bissaka-makes-it-two-but-im-not-sure-were-going-down-the-right-transfer-route kind of implied that it might be wiser to spend big and bring in a couple of world-class players.
But, in making that assumption, was I being a little foolhardy?
Perhaps, perhaps not!
But please consider the following before making up your own mind.
In putting pen-to-paper on a five-year deal, Aaron Wan-Bissaka became the club’s fifth biggest signing with the top-four being:-
• Paul Pogba
• Romelu Lukaku
• Angel di Maria
and
• Fred
But, if we take a close look at the above quartet, you could argue that it’s hard to justify bringing in such expensive purchases if you are looking for longevity.
Both Pogba and Lukaku are unlikely to be at Old Trafford next season, Di Maria has long gone after a short but inconclusive spell at the club and Fred continues to meander along as what can best be perceived as a bit-part player.
Which leads me to conclude, either United have been unlucky in seeking longevity with big-money purchases or just plain unlucky.
Either way, it does, returning to the big question in this article, make this editor feel a little foolhardy when, in the aforementioned article, he may have thought it wiser to adopt a different transfer policy this summer, but, then again we’ll see, as they say, statistic can be adopted to perfectly suit a point.
